“He made his choice on that beach dock,” Tilly said.
“Yes,” I said.
“We have made ours,” she said.
She went back to folding, her movements steady and rhythmic in the quiet room.
By five o’clock, the blue winter dusk began to settle over the Michigan pine trees at the edge of the yard.
I stepped out onto the narrow front porch, shutting the heavy wooden door quietly behind me so the baby would not wake.
