“It keeps the bedrooms warm,” I said, folding a small yellow undershirt.
“This is the warmest house we have ever owned,” Tilly said, looking at the yellow flames licking the dry birch logs.
“It is much smaller,” I said, placing the folded clothes into a neat stack on the low table.
“A large house only holds more empty space,” Tilly said, smoothing a small pair of blue overalls.
She set them down on her lap, her hands resting quietly on the denim fabric.
“Norman spoke to the lawyers in Traverse City again,” she said.
I paused, holding a white baby blanket in both hands.
“Did they find anything else?” I asked.
“The marketing firm Brielle owned has filed for bankruptcy,” Tilly said, her voice flat and decisive. “The eighty-two thousand dollars is gone.”
“I expected as much,” I said.
“Evan called his father’s office three times yesterday,” Tilly said, her eyes fixed on the fire.
I waited, my fingers tightening on the soft cotton blanket.
“He wanted to know if we would cover his legal fees for the separation from her,” Tilly said.
