“It is worse than that,” Norman said. “He used Tilly’s mother’s legacy to buy social media advertisements for that girl’s exercise videos. He bought her online views with our family’s future.”
“We can’t get it back, can we?” I asked. “The bank won’t reverse a transfer that he had the signature authority to make.”
“Not through the family court,” Norman said, finally looking at me. “But there are other ways to balance a ledger.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his silk handkerchief, slowly wiping his spectacles before putting them back on. His eyes were cold, an expression I had never seen on his face in fifteen years of Sunday dinners.
“What are you going to do, Norman?” I asked.
“I am going to speak with Tilly,” he said, his hand resting flat on the table. “She needs to know where her mother’s money went. She needs to understand exactly what her son is building his new life with.”
He stood up, leaving three dollar bills on the table for the coffee, and walked toward his car without waiting for me to follow.
