“He did,” Vance said. “And he did it with a power of attorney that he had you sign three years ago during the refinancing of the garage.”

I looked down at my hands, where the gold band was still missing from my finger, leaving only a pale, raised strip of skin. I had sold the only other ring I owned, my mother’s small diamond, just to keep the lights on last week, and now the empty space felt even wider.

“Is there anything left in the trust?” Norman asked, his voice steady but dry.

“Nine hundred dollars,” Vance said. “The account is effectively closed. There will be no interest payments coming in December.”

Norman stood up, his tall frame blocking the light from the office window. He did not look at me as he reached for his wool coat hanging on the back of the door.

“Come, Savannah,” Norman said, holding the door open. “We need some air.”
