“We should get some sleep,” I said, looking at the silver frame sitting on the table.

“Yes,” Tilly said, rising slowly from the sofa with a small wince as her knee caught. “Tomorrow we have to prepare the shipment.”

I watched her walk down the hall, her shadow long and thin against the white plaster walls of the passage.

I stood alone in the quiet room, the sound of the highway in the distance like a low, constant hum that never stopped. I reached down and touched the edge of the empty mantelpiece where the gold pocket watch had once been, the dust there slightly lighter than the rest of the dark wood.

The baby moved again, a sudden turn that made me press my hand hard against my side.

Norman was still at the lawyer’s office, sitting in the leather chair while the clock on the wall ticked past nine. He was looking at the ledger sheets, his thumb tracing the eighty-two thousand dollar transfer over and over until the paper was smudged with gray.

He did not call Evan. He did not call the resort in Key Biscayne.
