Tilly reached into her sleeve for her handkerchief, her fingers pulling the linen fabric halfway out before she let her hand drop back to her side. She looked at the baby, then back at me, her eyes softening.

“It is a strong name,” Tilly said, her voice softer than usual.

“Our futures will not depend on their father’s decisions anymore,” I said, looking at the sleeping face in the bassinet.

Norman nodded slowly, his hand tightening on the handle of his cane.

“We have taken care of that,” Norman said.

At four o’clock, Norman stood in the doorway of the corridor, gesturing for me to step out for a moment while Margot and Tilly watched the baby. I stood up slowly, the physical ache of the morning still lingering in my legs as I reached for my cotton robe. My slippers made a quiet dragging sound on the tiled floor.

The hallway was quiet, the only sound the distant hum of the ice machine near the nurses’ station. Norman walked beside me, his steps slow and deliberate to match my own ginger pace. He kept his hand near my elbow, not touching me but ready to catch me if I stumbled.
