Husband Leaves Pregnant Wife for Influencer Until Parents Deliver Wedding Photo Gift
I reached into my pocket and touched my mother’s gold wedding band, the last piece of jewelry I had left after selling my grandmother’s silver ring for forty-five dollars. I had planned to take it to the shop downtown before noon.
Norman took a leather-bound checkbook from his breast pocket and laid it on the wooden table. He unscrewed the cap of a black fountain pen, his hand steady and deliberate.
“This is for thirty-five hundred dollars,” Norman said, writing the numbers with a smooth, scratching sound. He slid the paper across the table toward me.
I stared at the black ink, my throat tightening as I reached out to touch the corner of the check. Accepting this money felt like a weight settling on my chest, a public admission that I could not protect my own children.
“I will pay you back,” I whispered, though we both knew my bank account held exactly fourteen dollars and twelve cents.
“You will not,” Norman said, his voice leaving no room for argument. “This is for the children, and it is only the beginning.”
