She turned the paper toward me, pointing to a small, blurry photograph of a low building with a sagging porch. The listing was for a two-bedroom cottage three miles from the interstate, priced at seven hundred and fifty dollars a month.
“It says the oil heat is extra,” I said.
“It has a yard,” Margot said. “The boys could play behind the shed where the highway fence is.”
I looked at the greasy fries on the plate. “It is very close to the road.”
“The walls stay standing, but they tilt,” Margot said, reading the description she had scribbled on the edge of the page.
She looked up at me, her brown eyes too wide and too old for a girl of fifteen. “We don’t have many choices left, do we?”
I reached across the table and took her hand, her fingers cold and sticky from the salt. “We have enough.”
“The landlord’s name is Miller,” she said.
She picked up her pencil and drew a heavy circle around the small advertisement. “I can call him from the booth in the lobby.”
