Norman sat in the corner armchair, his brass reading glasses tucked into his shirt pocket, his hand resting on the handle of his leather cane. He reached down to adjust the cuff of his trousers, then stopped, his eyes fixed on the small bundle in the clear tub. He looked older under the harsh hospital lights, but his shoulders were straight.
“She has very long fingers,” Margot said, reaching in to let the baby grasp her pinky.
“Do you think her hair will stay dark?” she asked.
Tilly stood on the other side of the bassinet, her hand resting on the plastic edge as she looked at me. She had a small paper cup of water from the hallway dispenser, but she had not tasted it yet.
“Have you decided on a name, Savannah?” Tilly asked.
“I want to call her Joy,” I said.
Norman looked up from his chair, his slow, resonant voice breaking the quiet of the small room.
“Joy was Tilly’s mother’s name,” Norman said.
