“Is there a limit on the daily withdrawal?” I asked.

Diane leaned closer to the counter, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Savannah, did you make a large transfer this morning?”

“No,” I said. “Evan handles the online accounts.”

She turned the monitor slightly, just enough for me to see the single line of numbers at the bottom of the screen.

The balance on our joint savings was zero. The checking account showed exactly fourteen dollars and twelve cents.

“I can check the transaction history for you,” Diane said softly.

“No,” I said, my voice flat. “That is fine.”

She printed a small white slip of paper and slid it across the counter.

I walked back to the Buick, the cold steering wheel freezing my bare hands. I did not start the engine for ten minutes, staring at the brick wall of the grocery store across the street.

At four o’clock, I sat at the kitchen table with the ceramic pig we used for laundry change. I turned it over and let the quarters and dimes clatter onto the wood.
