He carried a flat, square package wrapped in thick brown paper, holding it against his chest to shield it from the lake spray.

The camera operator panned slightly to follow him as he walked down the center aisle of the sand toward the dock.

Evan saw him first, his head tilting in surprise as he took a step forward from the floral arch.

“He thinks it is a delivery from someone famous,” Margot said.

Evan spoke to the minister, his mouth moving quickly in what looked like an apology, then reached out to take the package from the courier.

The courier handed him a small digital clipboard, and Evan signed it with a quick flick of his silver pen.

Instead of setting the box on the small table behind him, Evan began to tear the heavy paper away from the corner.

“He can’t wait,” I said.

The paper tore away in a long strip, flying out over the water like a dry leaf.

Beneath the paper, the polished silver edge of the photo frame caught the dull winter light.
