She picked up another onesie, her fingers smoothing the soft fabric with a sudden, fierce intensity.
“He doesn’t deserve to have his picture in our hallway,” she said. “I want to take down the one from his graduation.”
“We will do that this afternoon,” I said.
I stood up and began carrying the folded laundry toward the stairs, my steps heavy on the old wooden risers.
By six o’clock, the house was quiet. The younger children were upstairs listening to a radio program, their voices muffled through the ceiling. Tilly was sitting on our living room couch, the silver photo frame she had bought the day before sitting on her knees. She had not taken it out of the tissue paper yet.
“Norman told me,” she said, her voice softer than usual.
“I am sorry, Tilly,” I said, sitting in the armchair opposite her. “It was your mother’s money. It should have been safe.”
