Husband Leaves Pregnant Wife for Influencer Until Parents Deliver Wedding Photo Gift

I stood up to check the lock on the front door, the draft from the hallway chilling my ankles. When I looked out through the glass, the streetlights were flickering against the dark sky.

“Norman is with Vance now,” Tilly said from the couch. “They are rewriting the estate documents.”

“Does Evan know?” I asked.

“He will,” Tilly said. “When he signs for the package.”

She picked up the frame again, wrapping the tissue paper around it with slow, deliberate folds.

I walked back into the kitchen, where the old refrigerator was humming its familiar, uneven song. On the counter, the small blue folder that used to hold our tax documents sat empty, its cover bent from where I had searched it weeks ago.

I opened the drawer where we kept the utility bills, my fingers brushing against the red final notices that had arrived that afternoon. The mortgage statement was on top, the red ink of the past-due balance stamped twice across our names.

I did not show it to Tilly. I folded the paper in half and tucked it into the pocket of my sweater, the paper stiff against my ribs as I went back to the living room.
