She was in the kitchen, helping Margot arrange the new groceries we had bought with the check. Tins of soup, boxes of oatmeal, and cartons of milk lined the wooden pantry shelves, a sight that made the hollow feeling in my chest lift just a fraction.
“The boys are playing in the living room,” Tilly said, handing me a small jar of spices. “They had a good afternoon with the puzzle.”
“Thank you, Tilly,” I said, putting my coat on the peg by the door. “For everything.”
Tilly stopped, her hand resting on the edge of a canned vegetable shelf. She smoothed her skirt flat, her face serious in the dimming light of the late afternoon.
“Norman and I have spent forty years building our lives in this county, Savannah,” she said.
“I know,” I said, waiting.
“We built it for our family,” Tilly said, her voice dropping to a whisper so Margot would not hear from the dining room where she was setting the table. “For the children who carry our name and respect it.”
