By six in the evening, the room had grown quiet as Margot took the younger children down to the lobby to wait for Tilly’s sister. The winter sky outside the window had turned a deep, bruised purple, the highway lights beginning to flicker on in the distance.

The baby slept soundly, her tiny fists tucked up under her chin under the hospital blanket. The small plastic card taped to the front of her bassinet read Joy, in neat, blue marker.

My phone vibrated on the bedside table, the small gray plastic casing sliding an inch across the wood before I reached out my hand to pick it up. The sound of the vibration seemed incredibly loud in the quiet room.

The screen displayed a number from the southern part of the state, one I had never saved in my contacts.

“Savannah?” Evan’s voice came through the receiver, his rapid, transactional tone sounding thin and distant over the static.

“Evan,” I said.
