The cashier, a young girl with a silver stud in her nose, swiped my blue debit card through the reader. The machine let out three high, flat beeps.
“Declined,” the girl said, her voice carrying over the hum of the register next to us. “Do you want to try it again?”
“Please,” I said, my face burning under the cold fluorescent lights.
She swiped it a second time, slower. The three beeps returned, louder this time, and a small red light flashed on the screen. Behind us, Mrs. Gable shifted her basket of flowers to her other arm and looked up at the ceiling clock.
“We need to take some things off,” I said, my voice barely a whisper.
“Which ones?” the girl asked, her fingers hovering over the plastic keys.
I reached into the black plastic belt and pulled back the apples, the tuna, and one of the gallons of milk, leaving only the bread and the basic necessities. I handed the cashier the forty-five dollars from Robert, my fingers cold against the paper bills.
