I drove back to the house in silence, the heater in the Buick clicking every few seconds as the engine warmed. When I walked through the kitchen door, the smell of damp cotton met me. Margot was sitting at the table, a mountain of small white onesies and yellow receiving blankets piled in front of her. She was folding them with precise, neat corners, just as I had taught her when she was eight.
“Where were you?” she asked, not looking up from her work. “Tilly said you had an appointment with the lawyer.”
“I was at Vance’s office,” I said, sitting down in the chair across from her.
She stopped folding, her blue hair elastic twirling around her wrist as she watched my face.
“Is he coming back?” she asked.
“No, Margot,” I said, reaching out to touch one of the tiny cotton shirts. “And he didn’t just leave because he was unhappy with the marriage.”
“I saw the video she posted this morning,” Margot said, her voice dropping. “They were on a boat in Miami. She had a new diamond bracelet and she was laughing about how some people are stuck in the mud while others fly.”
