“We cannot afford to wait,” I said, looking down at my hands. “The mortgage is already past due, and the kids need winter boots.”
Vance closed the file with a soft thud and looked at Norman, who sat with his hands folded over his silver cane.
“I have reviewed the preliminary accounting Norman provided,” Vance said, turning back to me. “I am taking your case pro bono, Savannah.”
I blinked, looking from the lawyer to my father-in-law. “I do not understand. We cannot pay your retainer, and I cannot take on more debt.”
“Norman has provided a financial guarantee for all court costs and administrative fees,” Vance explained, sliding a copy of the agreement across the table. “My firm will handle the litigation without billing you for our time, but Norman is backing the expenses.”
I looked at Norman, but he was staring out the window at the gray parking lot where a few dry leaves were blowing across the concrete. He had already committed to this fight, using his own resources to secure my safety, but he refused to take any credit for it on his face.
