“I need this delivered to the Grand Traverse Resort beach pavilion by tomorrow noon,” Tilly said to the clerk.
The clerk, a woman named Martha with a gold name tag, tapped her fingers on the keyboard.
“Express mail will get it there by eleven in the morning,” Martha said. “But it requires a signature. If no one is there, they’ll leave a slip.”
“He will be there,” Tilly said. “And he must sign for it himself. It cannot be left with a desk clerk or a bridesmaid.”
Martha looked up, her eyebrows raised. “We have a hand-delivery option. Restricted delivery. The recipient must show identification to sign.”
“That is exactly what we want,” Tilly said.
“The fee is forty-two dollars and ten cents for overnight restricted,” Martha said.
Tilly reached into her small purse and pulled out two twenty-dollar bills and a five, sliding them through the slot.
“Is it fragile?” Martha asked, looking at the heavy, flat shape of the package.
“It’s glass,” Tilly said. “A family portrait.”
“And a legal notice,” I added quietly.
