We watched him from our kitchen table, a small gray figure on a five-inch screen, surrounded by wind and blowing sand.

“Do you think he will call us?” Margot asked.

“He won’t call today,” I said. “He has too many people to explain this to first.”

I pulled the blue nursery blanket closer around my shoulders, tucking its soft edges around my lap as I watched the gray lake on the screen.

“Grandma and Grandpa will be driving back in this,” Margot said, looking out our window at the first flakes of snow.

“Norman is a very careful driver,” I said.

I knew they would make it back to us, and that our futures would no longer depend on their father’s decisions.

“Are you okay, Mom?” Margot asked.

“I am,” I said.

I rubbed the tight curve of my stomach where the baby kicked against my palm, feeling the steady strength of it.

The phone on the table remained bright, showing the empty beach walkway and the discarded blue folder.

Then a hand finally reached toward the lens, blocking the light for a split second.
