Evan stood in the sand, his charcoal suit trousers flapping in the wind as he stared at the blue folder on the ground.
Behind him, Brielle reached the walkway, her bare shoulders shivering violently in the cold wind.
“Evan, answer me,” Brielle said, her voice rising to a screech. “Is the money gone?”
Evan did not look at her.
He looked down at the silver photo frame still gripped in his right hand, then threw it down onto the sand beside the blue folder.
The silver caught the dull light as it landed face-up in the beach grass.
“He threw it away,” Margot whispered from the kitchen table.
“He threw everything away,” I said.
On the screen, the guests were standing up from their chairs, whispering to one another as they began to walk toward the resort lobby.
The camera operator had left the tripod standing on the walkway, the lens still pointed at the beach where Evan stood alone.
