We walked out into the sharp November wind, the smell of woodsmoke and lake salt cutting through the exhaust of the morning traffic on Elm Street. The small coffee shop on the corner was nearly empty, save for an elderly couple sharing a danish by the counter. We took a small table by the window, where the glass was cold to the touch.

The waitress brought two mugs of black coffee, steam rising to cloud the glass pane next to us. Norman did not touch his cup. He stared out at the gray waters of the lake, his fingers drumming a slow, heavy pattern on the laminated tabletop.

“He knew about that money since he was twenty,” Norman said, his voice quiet. “My mother left it specifically so Margot could go to the state university without taking on debt. She wanted her great-grandchildren to have a start.”

“I thought he was just selfish,” I said, looking at the dark liquid in my mug. “I thought he just wanted a different life with someone who didn’t have flour on her apron. I thought he was panicked about turning forty-five.”
