She propped the screen against the heavy glass sugar bowl in the middle of our small kitchen table, adjusting the angle so we could both see.

Margot adjusted the volume, her fingers shaking slightly as she set the phone back down.

The small speaker hissed with the sound of the northern Michigan wind, a low, hollow roar that came through the phone like static.

On the small display, the gray expanse of Grand Traverse Bay stretched out to a freezing horizon, the water chopped into small, white-tipped peaks under a leaden sky.

A long wooden dock extended from the resort lawn out over the water, its planks dark and slick with winter moisture.

At the very end of the dock, a white floral arch stood against the wind, its silk ribbons whipping wildly toward the east.

I sat back in my chair, pressing both hands against my lower back where the baby had begun to kick with a heavy, rhythmic pressure.

“The wind looks freezing,” I said.

“It is thirty degrees up there,” Margot said, her finger tracing the edge of the phone screen where the digital viewer count was climbing.
