“It will last through the lake damp,” I said, stepping down onto the cleared path.

Norman stopped shoveling, leaning his weight against the black handle of the spade.

He reached into his heavy canvas coat pocket and pulled out his silk handkerchief to wipe a few stray flakes of snow from his spectacles.

“I had the county clerk verify the filing at nine this morning,” he said, putting his glasses back on.

He reached into his inner pocket and drew out a thick, white envelope.

“This belongs to you now, Savannah,” he said, holding it out.

I took the envelope, the heavy parchment paper cold against my bare fingers.

I slid the folded document out just enough to see the gold county seal and the words of the certified property deed.

My name was written on the first line, followed by the words sole owner, printed in dark, indelible black ink.

“There is no mortgage remaining on this land,” Norman said, his voice steady and calm.

“You paid the entire balance,” I said.
