Norman quietly closed the ledger containing the bank transfers.

The real estate office on Elm Street smelled of stale coffee and wet wool when I walked through the door at nine the next morning. Dan, the agent who had sold us our suburban house twelve years ago, did not look up immediately from his metal desk. He was sliding a thick stack of yellow documents into a manila envelope, his fingers moving slowly as if he were trying to delay the conversation.

“The bank called me yesterday afternoon, Savannah,” Dan said, finally looking up and resting his palms flat on the desk.

I sat down on the vinyl chair, my coat still zipped tight against the cold morning air. “We have thirty days to catch up on the interest.”

He slid a single sheet of white paper across the desk, his thumb covering the bank logo at the top before he let go. The bold letters at the middle of the page read Foreclosure Notice.

“Evan stopped making the payments in August,” he said.
