“Where did the eighty-two thousand come from, Norman?” I asked, looking at his quiet profile. “We only had forty thousand in that account at the end of the summer. I checked the balance after we paid for the kids’ school shoes.”
Norman did not answer me. He looked at Vance, a silent question passing between them that I could not read.
“We need to look at the source accounts,” Vance said, turning another page in his folder.
He pulled a second document from the bottom of the stack, this one stamped with the logo of a private trust company in Detroit. The paper was older, the margins yellowed around the edges.
“That is my mother’s estate ledger,” Norman said, his resonant voice dropping an octave. “The account we set aside for the grandchildren’s college tuition. It was supposed to be untouched until Margot turned eighteen.”
“He had signature authority as a secondary trustee,” Vance said. “He signed the withdrawal slip on October fifth, using the joint power of attorney.”
“Eighty-two thousand dollars,” I whispered, the number sitting like a physical weight in the small room. “He took the money out of an account that supported seven children?”
