He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a quiet whisper that made the small room feel even colder. “You need to find a place to move your seven children before the end of the week.”

I stood up from the chair, my boots squeaking on the linoleum floor as I pulled my gloves on. “We have sixty-four boxes of winter clothes in the basement.”

“I would start packing them today,” Dan said.

I walked out into the parking lot without saying another word.

By one o’clock, the yellow rental truck was parked on our grass, its rear tires sinking into the soft winter mud of the front lawn. Two young men in grease-stained jackets were carrying our old dining room table down the front steps, their boots leaving dark clods of dirt on the porch.

Margot stood by the tailgate, her fifteen-year-old face pale and pinched in the wind. She twirled the blue hair elastic around her wrist, over and over until her skin turned white.

“Where does the green box go, Mom?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
