I stood at the counter, tilting a gallon of milk to pour it carefully into seven blue plastic bowls.

The plastic gallon jug was heavy, costing four dollars and ten cents at the highway grocery store now, but every drop went where it was needed.

Margot, fifteen, our oldest daughter, stood near the warmth of the stove, cradling baby Joy against her shoulder with a slow, practiced sway.

“She didn’t wake up once after three,” Margot said, her voice low so she wouldn’t startle the baby.

“She is a good sleeper,” I said, setting the milk jug down. “Just like you were.”

Margot twirled her blue hair elastic around her wrist twice, her eyes bright as she looked out at the kitchen table.

The younger children were already sitting down, their voices rising in a noisy, overlapping chatter about the fresh snow outside.

Bright winter light poured through the small window above the sink, catching the steam rising from the bowls of warm oatmeal.

“We have enough spoons today,” Margot said, pointing with her chin toward the drawer.
