“I am in a motel off the highway near Lansing,” he said, his words crowding each other as they always did when he was panicked. “They locked the marketing accounts this afternoon.”

“Who locked them?” I asked.

“The bank,” he said, the sound of a television commercial playing in his background. “My father’s attorney filed some kind of injunction, and Brielle’s manager already took the car.”

“I know about the transfer, Evan,” I said.

“I just need enough to get through the weekend,” he said, his voice dropping to a low, pleading hum. “Six hundred dollars, Savannah. Just to keep the room and buy some food until I can call the office on Monday.”

I looked down at the small sleeping face of our daughter in her bassinet. Her tiny chest rose and fell with a steady, quiet rhythm that felt completely separate from his panic.

“I do not have six hundred dollars for you,” I said.

“It is a loan,” he said, his tone turning sharp and defensive. “I am the father of your children, Savannah. You cannot just leave me on the side of the road.”
