Husband Leaves Pregnant Wife for Influencer Until Parents Deliver Wedding Photo Gift
At eleven o’clock the next morning, the glass door of Miller Jewelry rattled against its brass latch as I pushed it open. The velvet tray on the glass counter inside was faded to a dusty gray, worn down by decades of wedding bands and gold chains. Robert, who had adjusted my watch battery for ten years, did not look at my face as he slid his magnifying loupe into his eye socket. He turned my grandmother’s silver ring under the bright halogen lamp, his fingers thick and steady.
“The band is thin, Savannah,” Robert said, his voice dropping as if we were in an empty church. “And the stone is paste. I can only offer you the melt value of the silver itself.”
“It was her wedding ring,” I said, keeping my hands folded over my purse to hide my dry knuckles. “She wore it fifty years. I always thought the blue stone was an aquamarine.”
Robert took the black loupe out of his eye and set it on the velvet. He looked past my shoulder at the cold rain streaking the street outside. “It is colored glass, Savannah. I am sorry. It was a common substitution during the depression when things were lean.”
