He stood up, his tall frame blocking the pale autumn light coming through the kitchen window. He picked up a wooden mallet from the counter, which he had brought from his own workshop.

“Let us look at that nursery,” he said.

The nursery still smelled of the fresh lavender paint we had put on the walls back in October. The pieces of the two hundred and eighty-nine dollar wooden crib were still scattered across the hardwood floor, just as Margot and I had left them.

Norman knelt on the floor, his knees popping in the quiet room. He had his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the faded blue tattoo from his navy days on his forearm.

“Margot told me Evan took his suits,” Norman said, holding the mallet ready.

“Every single one,” I said, leaning against the doorframe to take the pressure off my hips. “He did not even leave a hanger.”

Norman struck the joint of the crib with the mallet, a dull, solid thud that echoed in the empty room. He did not look at me when he spoke next.
