“The family trust paid it,” Norman said, adjusting his wool cap. “Your children will have a roof over their heads as long as they need one.”

“Thank you, Norman,” I said.

He looked down at the snow, his face softening as he watched my two youngest boys peer out through the kitchen window at the new swings.

“It is not a gift, Savannah,” he said. “It is what was already theirs.”

He picked up his shovel again, his movements deliberate and slow as he cleared the remaining snow from the wooden frame.

I walked back inside, holding the heavy white envelope against my chest.

By three in the afternoon, the house had grown quiet as the younger children took their naps in the back bedrooms.

Tilly, seventy-two, my mother-in-law, sat in the wooden rocking chair by the brick fireplace, a high basket of clean laundry resting by her feet.

She smoothed her gray wool skirt flat over her knees before reaching down to pull out a small pair of cotton socks.

“The chimney draws much better than the one in the suburban house,” Tilly said, her voice soft but clear.
