“Put it in the back, near the cab,” I said, lifting a heavy carton of kitchen towels.
A cold gust of wind blew across the driveway, scattering a handful of dry leaves across the open back of the truck. Mrs. Gable, our neighbor from three doors down, stopped at the edge of the asphalt, her yellow raincoat bright against the gray sky.
“Are you leaving us, Savannah?” she asked, her voice carrying easily across the empty yard.
I kept my hands tight on the cardboard box, my knuckles aching from the cold. “We are relocating closer to the children’s new school.”
“The mailman said the county was putting a foreclosure sign on the garage tomorrow,” she said.
The two movers stopped on the wooden ramp, the heavy oak dresser wedged between them. They turned to look at me, waiting to see if I would answer her.
“We are just moving some things,” I said, my voice sounding thin and dry in the open air.
“My cousin had to leave her place last spring when the bank took it,” Mrs. Gable said, stepping closer to the muddy lawn. “Is that what this is?”
