She stood up before I could answer, her boots clattering against the metal base of the table.

The kitchen of the cottage was seven feet wide, the yellow linoleum floor worn down to the black backing near the sink. Tilly stood by the small wooden counter, her seventy-two-year-old hands steady as she unwrapped our old blue plates from their newspaper packing.

A cold draft came from beneath the back door, smelling of diesel exhaust and wet gravel from the highway twenty yards away.

“The sink has a leak in the copper pipe underneath,” Tilly said, her voice quiet but firm.

“Norman is bringing some tape for it tomorrow,” I said, lifting a stack of bowls from a cardboard box.

She smoothed her gray wool skirt flat with both hands, a gesture she made only when she had made a final decision. “We will need to buy two extra space heaters for the back bedroom where the girls are sleeping.”

“The electric bill will be high,” I said.

“We will pay it,” Tilly said.
