I turned the gas knob off. “Just someone from his work, probably.”

“She has a fitness page,” Margot said, her thumb tapping the screen to show a logo. “He should be ashamed of himself.”

She twirled a blue hair elastic around her wrist, over and over, until her skin turned pink. I took the phone from her hand and laid it face down on the counter.

“Eat your breakfast,” I said.

At ten o’clock, after the younger children had left for school, I went into the small home office at the back of the house. The room smelled of old paper and the cold draft that leaked through the window frame.

I opened the bottom drawer of the oak desk where we kept the household budget notebook. The black vinyl binder was there, but the blue folder behind it felt light.

I pulled it out and opened it on the desk. The tax documents from the last three years, the ones Evan promised he had filed in April, were missing.

The metal rings of the binder click-clacked as I flipped through the monthly expenses. The page for October was blank, the columns for mortgage and electric payments empty.
