He slid a green bill drawer open under the glass counter and counted out two twenties and a five. The paper was crisp and dry. I took the money and tucked it into the zip pocket of my purse, right next to the empty blue folder I had taken from Evan’s desk.
By two o’clock, Margot and I stood in the third checkout lane at the market. The wooden cart held four tins of tuna, a bag of yellow apples, two gallons of milk, and a loaf of white bread. The milk alone was four dollars and ten cents a gallon now, a price that seemed to rise every time I looked at the shelf. Mrs. Gable, who lived three doors down from us on our street, stood directly behind us with a green basket of fresh chrysanthemums.
