“Norman brought the rest of our boxes from the old garage last night,” I said, passing her a spoon.

She took it, her shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch as she tucked the baby closer.

“So we don’t have to go back there for anything else,” she said.

“Nothing at all,” I said.

The sound of my six other children laughing over a spilled drop of milk filled the small room, the noise bouncing off the low plaster ceiling.

By eleven, the sun had climbed higher, turning the thick blanket of Michigan snow into a blinding white sheet that covered the small backyard.

I walked out onto the back step, wrapping my thick wool cardigan tight around my waist to keep out the biting wind.

Norman, seventy-four, my father-in-law, stood near the edge of the property line by the wooden swing set he had spent the last three days building.

He was using a red plastic shovel to clear the fresh drift of snow off the two yellow swing seats.

“The wood is cedar,” Norman said, his slow, resonant voice carrying clearly through the crisp winter air.
