Husband Leaves Pregnant Wife for Influencer Until Parents Deliver Wedding Photo Gift

Margot sat across from me, her chin resting in her hands. She sorted the coins into neat stacks of ten.

“Is Dad coming back to pay the oil bill?” she asked.

“We have plenty of wood for the fireplace,” I said, stacking four quarters.

“Are we going to lose the house, Mom?”

I looked at her blue hair elastic, then at her wide, dark eyes. “No,” I said, placing my hand over her stack of quarters. “We are not going to lose anything.”

She looked down at her lap, her shoulders dropping. “We only have twelve dollars here.”

“I have my grandmother’s ring,” I said, though the thought made a cold knot form in my chest. “We will be fine.”

She did not answer. She stood up and went to the window, watching the yellow school bus pull up to the corner.

I smoothed the white bank slip flat on the table, my thumb tracing the black ink.

The paper was cold against my skin.

The number 14.12 stared back at me.
