“Do not apologize for his sins, Savannah,” she said. “He made his choice when he signed that transfer paper. He knew exactly whose pocket he was stealing from.”

“He thinks he got away with it,” I said. “He thinks because he is in Florida, we can’t touch him. He told me to talk to his lawyer.”

Tilly reached into her purse and pulled out a small, black-and-white photograph. It was her mother, a young woman with dark hair standing on the shore of Lake Michigan, smiling into the wind.

“He has crossed a line that can never be undone,” Tilly said, her fingers steady as she slid the photograph into the silver frame.

“What is the frame for, Tilly?” I asked, watching her secure the metal tabs on the back.

“It is for his wedding present,” she said, her voice quiet and hard. “We are going to make sure he receives it on the dock on the fifteenth.”

She set the frame on the coffee table, the polished silver catching the yellow light of the floor lamp. The young woman in the photograph looked out at us, her smile frozen in fifty-year-old gray ink, while the wind from the highway began to rattle the kitchen window.
