Margot dropped her head, her dark hair falling over her face so the neighbor could not see her eyes.
“We need to finish loading the truck, Mrs. Gable,” I said.
I turned my back to her and walked inside the empty house, the bare wooden floorboards echoing with every step I took.
We sat in the corner booth of the highway diner at four o’clock, the smell of grease and burnt coffee heavy in the air. A single plate of French fries sat between us, the grease soaking through the thin paper liner.
Margot was staring at a local rental paper she had taken from the wire rack by the cash register. Her thumb was dark with newsprint ink.
“Most of these want a two-month deposit, Mom,” she said, not looking up from the page.
“Your grandfather gave us some cash for the transition,” I said, though I knew the three thousand five hundred dollars would not last past December.
“Here is one on Route Nine,” she said.
