“The cabin belongs to the kids’ future,” I said, my heart starting to beat a little faster against my ribs. “We promised we would keep it in the family for their summers.”

“Selling it will clear the path for everyone,” he said, his face softening into a practice smile. “It is the only way to get the bank off our backs and keep this house safe from foreclosure.”

“You want me to sign it now?” I asked.

“It will only take a second,” he said, pointing to the bottom of the page. “Then we can both move forward without any more lawyers getting involved.”

I did not take the pen from his hand.

I stood up slowly, the weight of the baby making my knees ache, and walked past him into the dining room.

The dining room table was dark oak, scarred with the tiny scratches of seven children’s silverware over fifteen years.

I laid the white document flat on the wood, the sleet still tapping against the glass behind me.

Evan followed me, standing close enough that the scent of his expensive new cologne filled the small space between us.
