She set a blue plate on the shelf, the ceramic clinking against the bare wood. The shelf was slightly crooked, the plates sliding toward the corner until they rested against the wall.

“Evan called his father this afternoon,” Tilly said, her back still turned to me.

I stopped with my hands in the packing paper. “What did he want?”

“He wanted us to sign a letter saying we approved of his new business venture in Traverse City,” she said.

She turned around slowly, her arthritic knee making her favor her left side. Her face was very pale under the single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling.

“He said it would help his credit rating with the bank,” she said.

“Did Norman sign it?” I asked.

“Norman hung up the phone,” Tilly said.

She reached into the box and took out the last of the matching teacups, the handle chipped from the move.

“The old house is locked now,” I said. “The bank put the padlock on the front door at five o’clock.”

“This house is smaller, but it is ours for now,” Tilly said, placing the cup on the tilted shelf.
