I looked down at the paper, my fingers tracing the cold blue ink of the county clerk’s stamp. The numbers were printed in neat, black type, representing a level of security I had not felt since the day Evan walked out.

“It is paid in full, Savannah,” Norman said. “There is no mortgage, no bank loan, and no lease for you to sign.”

“He cannot touch this house,” I said.

“Evan has been legally removed from the trust,” Norman said, his voice carrying no anger, only a flat, heavy finality. “His signature is no longer valid on any document bearing our family name.”

I held the envelope against my side, the paper crisp against my palm.

A nurse pushed a laundry cart past us, her soft rubber soles squeaking on the linoleum, her eyes lingering on the deed in my hand before she turned the corner. A bell chimed twice near the elevators, signaling an arrival from the main lobby.
