I looked at the figure at the bottom of the page, the black ink sharp against the cheap paper. The total outstanding balance was twenty-four thousand dollars, plus interest and legal fees that had accumulated over five months.

“But the mail,” I said, my voice barely reaching across the desk. “I never saw a single notice from the bank.”

“The billing address was changed to a post office box in Traverse City four months ago,” Dan said, tapping his yellow pencil on the edge of his desk. “The statements were diverted before they ever reached your mailbox.”

He did not look me in the eye when he said it. He looked past my shoulder at the window, where the gray November sleet was beginning to streak the glass.

“The sheriff’s sale is scheduled for the first Tuesday of next month,” he said.

My hand went to my lower back, where the baby gave a sharp, hard kick against my ribs. “Can we file an appeal to stop the sale?”

“An appeal costs money you don’t have, and the bank has already sold the debt to a holding company,” Dan said.
