Margot had already taken the younger children to the school bus, leaving the kitchen unusually quiet. The smell of cold coffee from the morning sat heavy in the air. Tilly was moving around the stove, her steps slow but determined, though I could see she was keeping her weight off her left knee.

“The electric company says we owe four hundred and twelve dollars,” I said, sitting opposite him. I rubbed my lower back where the baby had begun to kick in rhythmic, heavy thumps.

Norman did not look up immediately. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a silk handkerchief, and slowly cleaned his spectacles. His slow, resonant voice always made the kitchen feel smaller, more crowded.

“They will not be turning off your power, Savannah,” Norman said.

Tilly stood by the sink, rinsing a glass. She set it down with a sharp click and smoothed her wool skirt flat with both hands. It was the gesture she made whenever a decision had been finalized in her mind.

“We are here to clear the register,” Tilly said, her voice soft but entirely firm.
