By six in the evening, the sky over the Gentry valley had turned a deep, dusty rose, with long streaks of purple cloud hanging low over the western ridge. I sat on the top step of the back porch, my legs stretched out in front of me as the evening chill began to settle into the wood.

Katie sat to my left, her chin resting in her hands as she watched the shadows lengthen across the gravel driveway. Elena sat on the bottom step, her boots dusty from the afternoon feeding, her fingers idly tracing the edge of her wooden clipboard.

“The county extension office called while you were out by the creek,” Elena said, her voice quiet in the evening air. “They have three children from the county clinic scheduled for the first training session on Tuesday morning.”

“Are the gentle mares ready?” I asked, looking toward the dark silhouette of the main barn.

“We have them in the small corral,” Elena said. “They are quiet enough for a child to lead with a single hand.”
