My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

“He has been like this since Samuel brought the rental truck through here,” Elena said. “I tried to quiet him down with some alfalfa, but he won’t touch it.”

“Did Samuel go into the tack room?” I asked.

Elena nodded, her grip tightening on her clipboard. “He spent ten minutes in there with a cardboard box. I thought he was getting the show halters.”

I walked down to the small office at the end of the breezeway and opened the wooden cabinet where we kept the registration papers. The leather binder was there, but when I opened it, the plastic sleeves were empty.

“The breeding certificates,” Elena said from the doorway. “The ones for the fifteen thousand dollars in fees we collected last month. They’re gone.”

Without those papers, we could not register the new foals or prove the lineage to the buyers.

“I’m going to the bank,” I said, reaching for my truck keys.

The glass doors of Gentry National Bank let in the smell of cold air conditioning and floor wax. Sarah, the teller who had worked the front counter since my father was on the school board, gave me a small, careful smile as I reached her window.
