“I just want to close the book, Marcus,” I said. “I can’t start rebuilding if I’m still trying to starve his sister out of her home.”

“He doesn’t deserve your mercy,” Marcus said quietly.

“It’s not for him,” I said. “It’s for me. I don’t want his ghost hanging over my pastures anymore.”

Marcus signed the bottom of the disclosure form and slid it into his folder. “The deputy is waiting for you in the basement. Samuel asked to see you before they transfer him to the diagnostic unit in Huntsville.”

The stairs leading down to the holding facility were narrow and concrete, the gray paint chipped away at the edges of the steps. The air grew cooler as I went down, carrying the sharp scent of industrial disinfectant.

The visiting room was divided by a heavy steel counter and three panes of thick glass. Samuel was already there, sitting on a low stool under the middle pane. The bright orange jumpsuit made his skin look pale and gray, and his hair, usually styled with expensive pomade, was flat and greasy.
