“What about Monday?” I asked.

“That is the real issue,” Marcus said. “Without the line of credit, you cannot process the payroll for the stable hands.”

Elena Vance walked up the steps behind us, holding her wooden clipboard tight against her chest.

“I heard about the freeze,” Elena said, her voice precise and calm.

“I cannot pay you on Monday, Elena,” I said. “I do not know when the court will release the funds.”

Elena did not blink.

“The horses still need to be turned out and fed,” Elena said. “I am not leaving them.”

“You have rent to pay,” I said.

“I have some savings,” Elena said. “And the other three hands have agreed to stay on for two weeks without draw.”

“We will file an emergency motion to release the livestock maintenance funds,” Marcus said. “But the judge will not see us until Friday.”

“We have three days,” I said.

“We have three days,” Marcus agreed.
