Elena sat opposite us, her wooden clipboard resting against her knee. She had her pen tucked behind her ear, her face serious as she watched me scan the pages.
“The bank manager called while you were in town,” Elena said. “The forensic audit is complete. They’ve verified the siphoned funds and restored our credit line. We can buy the alfalfa for the winter.”
“And the attorney fees?” I asked.
“Marcus sent his final statement,” Katie said, pointing to a small line at the bottom of the ledger. “It’s three thousand less than we expected. He said it was a family discount for grandfather’s sake.”
I looked at the signature block at the bottom of the new partnership agreement Marcus had drafted. It was a simple document, only four pages long, but it held the future of the Brennan Ranch.
“I want to make a change to the percentage, Elena,” I said.
Elena looked up, her fingers tightening on the edge of her clipboard. “The thirty percent we discussed is more than fair, Lily. I don’t need more than that to keep the barns running.”
